Domaine du Murinais Crozes-Hermitage Les Amandiers 2013, Rhone Valley, France
This is a beautifully crafted, un-showy, old-fashioned and gently refreshing style of Crozes that also expresses perfectly the terroir. The Syrah shows an earthy, blackberry and raspberry purity with an appropriate dash of black pepper. It's made from organic vines, simply, using wild yeasts, a light touch of sulfites (42 mg/L SO2 Tot) and wears just 12.73% alcohol.
Pure and vibrant classic Northern Rhône Syrah, displaying fresh and lifted blackberry, raspberry fruit aromas with violets, clove and black pepper to lend complexity. Medium bodied and dry, the tannins are very fine and juicy, the fruit very clear on the palate. Gentle and delightful.
From 6.5 hectares of organically cultivated vines planted on very dry gravel-limestone soils over red clay at 120 m altitude and for the most part on flat land. The climate is continental, with 4 clear seasons, warm to hot dry summers and cold, wet winters. The vines are 20 to 40 years old. Grapes are hand picked.
The grapes undergo a sorting in the vineyard and
now on a sorting table in the cellar. Then bunches are de-stemmed, and allowed
a pre-ferment cold soak at 5ºC for 5 days to accentuate a more fruity
character, then fermented in concrete tank using wild yeasts at up to 35°C,
with a total cuvaison of 21 days. Extraction is carried out by short gentle
daily remontage and very occasional pigeage. The wine is matured 12 months in
concrete tank. The wine is bottled un-filtered and un-fined
