Giovanni Rosso Langhe Nebbiolo 2013, Piedmont, Italy ("Poor man's Barolo")
With its haunting perfume of dried roses and tar, leather and spice, capacity for long ageing and haunting flavours of game and tobacco, Barolo is rightly revered as one of the greatest names in the wine world. But this Northern Italian prima donna comes with a gilded price tag. Step up then this wine: it is made by one of Barolo's top producers and from the same variety as the Great Barolissimo but is made in an earlier drinking less tannic style that makes for early drinking. A poor man's Barolo as we like to call it. But there's absolutely no shame in that.
