Weinbgut Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten #20 Riesling Kabinett 2012, Mosel, Germany
This is a beautifully balanced classic Mosel RIesling - off dry but with a wonderful acidity counterpoint that makes for a wonderfully balanced wine.
Alfred and his brother Rolf Merkelbach have been running
their 1.9 hectare wine estate in Urzig (Mosel) for decades.
The Urziger Würzgarten site, downstream from Zeltingen, has a striking reddish clay topsoil mixed with slate, giving particularly spicy, aromatic, weighty wines and consequently the name of the vineyard (Würzgarten = Spice Garden). The Merkelbach wines are disarmingly subtle yet redolent of flavour - bacon fat, blackcurrant leaf, briar, rose petals.
Vinification is traditional, using old oak Fuder. They bought their last in 1970, and firmly believe that each cask imparts its own individual style to the wine it holds.
Picked with 81° Oechsle, and bottled with 19 grams of residual sugar and 9.36% alcohol, the Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett has a bright lemon color and offers raisiny flavors... The wine is nicely sweet and piquant on the palate, as well as light and mineral, and finishes with a stimulating salinity. Good length.
